I tried to download the pix from my wife's Nikon 'coolpix' 5200 with Gwenview last nite, but a box came up saying that Gwenview can't deal with the extension .DSC. As most people know, I'm not really too tech savvy, but I couldn't see any way to change the extension, and there's no wifi for 20 miles from where I'm living. I ended up having to use Winblows :x :x
Anyone know of a different photo app I can download that can deal with that extension?

I use Debian unstable with the Liquorix kernel.

THX

I downloaded Digikam (apt-get install) updated the menus (update-menus), then shut-down and went to lunch at the local senior center, came back to the library and started up my lappy again, but the KDE menus don't show Digikam at all. Is this a KDE thing or what? Is there something more I need to do for KDE? I don't usually use KDE for my OS's, I usually use something lighter like XFCE, IceWM or something, KDE came with this lappy, so I thought I'd try it out :D

I finally found it thru the terminal, but I'd like to have it in the menu

Code:
[email protected]:~$ whereis digikam
digikam:
[email protected]:~$ find digikam
find: `digikam': No such file or directory
[email protected]:~$ locate digikam
/usr/share/app-install/desktop/digikam.desktop
/usr/share/app-install/icons/digikam.xpm
/usr/share/icons/oxygen/128x128/apps/digikam.png
/usr/share/icons/oxygen/16x16/apps/digikam.png
/usr/share/icons/oxygen/22x22/apps/digikam.png
/usr/share/icons/oxygen/256x256/apps/digikam.png
/usr/share/icons/oxygen/32x32/apps/digikam.png
/usr/share/icons/oxygen/48x48/apps/digikam.png
/usr/share/icons/oxygen/64x64/apps/digikam.png
/var/cache/apt/archives/digikam-data_4%3a2.6.0-1_all.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/partial/digikam_4%3a2.6.0-1+b2_amd64.deb

P.S. I just downloaded showphoto2 (since digikam is based on it) as well as the docs for both so I can try out both of them. IF I install IceWM, (which I believe is based on Gnome) I thought I'd also download shotwell, but I'll put off loading the docs for now  Once I get one of the above 'figgered' out, I'll get rid of Gwenview and any others I don't need to use, to save some space. For now, I'm just trying to cover all the angles!

Hi, JP. Glad to here you made it back to the Big Sky country after that eventful trip. ;)
If you r-click the k-menu button and select "edit applications" and then choose "New Item" it's fairly easy to follow.
If you get stuck on the command part, first try starting Digikam from a terminal. That'll tell you if it installed properly.

You should, regardless of which window manager or desktop environment you are running, be able to add a command to your menu, and depending on what you are using, even associate it with an icon or image, and since you know where several of them are located, you've done most of the work already.

In essence,

1. Identify where the digicam image is (or whatever tool you want to run) and make a note of it; I try to copy path names either into a notepad editing tool or have them somewhere in a visible terminal, where I can copy and paste their contents.

2. Do the same with the action icon that you want to display, either on your desktop, toolbar, or program menu.

Once you have them, you can add either a menu entry, a desktop icon, or a toolbar icon associated with the program that you want to run.

Took a look at the docs, they say to plug in the camera anbd digikam will come up -- couldn't find a command to run it -- digikam doesn't come up when I start the camera, only gwenview does ...... go to do more research  THX

NOTE: digikam and gphoto2 don't appear in the menu, but shotwell does ...... maybe I'll d/l the docs on that when I can. (not much d/l speed in this place :(
