The September 18, 2006 edition of DistroWatch had an article about "Extracting package lists" as one of their feature articles in the "Tips and tricks" section of the edition, which can be found at http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20060918#tips

It includes Debian and Debian-based distributions, Fedora Core and other RPM-based distributions, Slackware Linux and Slackware-based distributions, Gentoo Linux and Gentoo-based distributions, Arch Linux and Arch-based distributions, and FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD and other BSD systems, so it covers not only Linux distributions, but also a couple of the most common BSD (Unix-based) systems. They believe that their coverage represents over 95% of all available Linux and BSD systems, but does not cover distributions that use their own unique packaging methods only. I think that it is likely to be helpful to anyone trying to figure out which packages are available, and several of the commands even organize and sort the output for easy reading. Since I've seen messages in the past wondering about how to locate the names of packages, this may be helpful to a few people.
